Why can’t politicians behave more like Boy Scouts

My two sons, along with their Boy Scout troop, went backpacking in the mountains over the weekend. Even though some climbs were challenging for them, the weather was great and everyone had a blast.

The people you are with on any trip can make a huge difference in how much you enjoy it. Boy Scouts and their leaders have higher character standards than the average Joe, which is why it’s so much fun to watch them grow and mature.

Now that I am back at work, I began to wonder how many Wall Street and government employees were involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or other character-building organizations. How many of those who were there can you still remember and practice the virtues honesty, courtesy and kindness?

Although I don’t claim to be omniscient, my observations indicate that politicians and bankers are more likely to be greedy for power and money. Capitalism is a good thing. Businesses would not be able to survive without them and society would be less pleasant. There must be a balance between making money, and doing the right things. The latter can lead to the former, I believe.

My businesses, which include buying real estate notes (also known mortgage notes), and medical factoring are based on the principle of treating others as we would like to be treated. Many times, I’ve given up on easy money because I wouldn’t have been able sleep at night. Many of you likely follow the same principles. Our country would be in a better place if its leaders followed the same standards.
